Who was Paul Reubens?
Paul Reubens, born Paul Rubenfeld on August 27, 1952, in Peekskill, New York, became a pop culture icon as the beloved character Pee-wee Herman. Raised in Sarasota, Florida, Reubens grew up with a passion for comedy and entertainment. He began his career in the 1970s as a member of the Los Angeles-based improv group The Groundlings, where he developed the quirky, eccentric persona of Pee-wee Herman that would later become a cultural phenomenon.
In 1981, Reubens launched The Pee-wee Herman Show, a stage production that gained a cult following and eventually led to an HBO special. His breakout moment came with the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), directed by Tim Burton. The movie was a massive success, turning Pee-wee into a household name. This led to Pee-wee's Playhouse, a beloved children's TV show that aired from 1986 to 1991, earning critical acclaim for its creativity and whimsical style.
Though his career faced setbacks due to legal troubles in the early 1990s, Reubens continued to work in both television and film, appearing in projects like Mystery Men (1999), Blow (2001), and The Blacklist. He made a triumphant return as Pee-wee Herman with Pee-wee’s Big Holiday on Netflix in 2016, delighting fans old and new.
